France holds the presidency of the G7 for 1996. Created in 1975, following
the initiative of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, the G7 brings together the
world's seven leading industrialised nations: Germany, Canada, USA, UK, Italy,
Japan and France. Each summit focuses on economic questions for the first half
and on political questions in the second. Since 1994, the Russian premier is
regularly invited to the second part of the summit. The major meetings of the G7
this year include the following:
- employment, Lille, France, 1 and 2 April 1996 - nuclear safety,
Moscow, 19 and 20 April 1996 - the Environment, in Cabourg (France), 9 and
10 May 1996
- the information society, Midrand, South Africa, 13 to 15 May 1996 -
Summit in Lyon, France, 27 to 29 June 1996

The decision to hold this conference was taken at a summit of State and
government leaders of the G7 at
Halifax
in June 1995, following a proposal of the South African vice-president Mr
M'Beki.
South Africa invited over thirty countries to participate in this
conference. Apart from the members of the G7, China, Australia, Russia and over
20 developing countries were also invited. Several international organisations
were also invited. This conference included two ministerial sessions and three
workshops on specific themes. An exhibition was demonstrating the progress made
in the pilot projects which were agreed in Brussels during the G7 ministerial
conference in February 1995. The results of the Midrand conference will be
taken up at the G7 summit in Lyon (France), 27 to 29 June 1996.
