The global mobile telephone market, with 325 300 new subscribers, continues to show signs of considerable vitality, bringing the total number to 4 641100. The net growth rate over six months moves to 51%, compared to 39% in October 1996 and 29% in October 1995.

In all, 4 502 900 people have subscribed to one of the digital services in France. The increase in the number of the digital subscribers in October is 333 300, very close to the monthly record set in September (+ 345 500). The share of this monthly record by France Telecom is at its lowest ever at 33 %, that of SFR is stable at 44 %, and that of Bouygues reaches its highest level at 22%.

The Améris service of France Caraïbe Mobiles in the Antilles islands, and SRR in Reunion, with 21 400 and 23 900 clients respectively, continue to progress at a regular rhythm. Olla, the France Telecom DCS 1800 service offered in the town of Toulouse, shows results for the month of October that confirm the change in tendency observed in September, with a net increase in the number of subscribers by 11.4 %.

Analogue services are declining faster with a loss of 8000 clients. For the second month in a row, the share of SFR Analogique in this decline is the same as that of R2000.

With regard to sales of GSM, the share of resellers is down slightly in October to 47.2%. Direct sales of Itinéris, as with those of SFR GSM, are now more than 50% at 51.9% and 53.6% respectively.
