To coincide with the launch of National Statistics, the ONS web site ( http://www.ons.gov.uk) will close on 7 June 2000. Anyone trying to access the ONS site after this date will be redirected to the new National Statistics web site at http://www.statistics.gov.uk. You may wish to use the following background information on your site. You may be aware that the most radical shake-up of official statistics for 30 years takes place on 7 June 2000 with the launch of National Statistics. National Statistics will bring a wide range of official data under one umbrella, overseen by a National Statistician and an independent Statistical Commission. For customers of statistical data and services the new arrangements will ensure coherence and transparency of data, and increased emphasis on data quality - providing a statistical service that customers and the public can have confidence in. A new website has been developed to mark the occasion of the launch National Statistics. The site will be a merger of the ONS [www.ons.gov.uk] and GSS [www.statistics.gov.uk] websites and will contain sources and contacts for all the products NS produces and the services it provides. It will offer free downloadable economic and social statistics via a database delivery system, ONS Press Releases, details of job vacancies, advertise special promotions and provide links to other government departments' statistics outside of NS's scope.
