(403) 492-3272, Fax (403) 492-2715 ___________________________________________________________________________ French Applications are invited for three tenure-track positions in French, effective July 1, 1996, at or near the floor of the rank of Assistant Professor, in the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Studies at the University of Alberta. The 1995-96 minimum sala~ for Assistant Professors is $39,320. Applicants must have a PhD, a native or near native proficiency in French, a demonstrated interest in research, and strong teaching potential. Teaching duties will include responsibilities in both undergraduate and graduate programs, and the successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the development and teaching of programs in French in general as well as to teach in their areas of expertise. The Department is in the process of redesigning its programs and the research interests of new appointees will play a major role in detelmining their direction. Applications are invited for all specializations in French. For example, candidates might offer any of the following as their area of expertise: Literary History, Theory and Criticism, French Intellectual History, Cultural Practices, Francophone Studies, Translation Studies, or French-CanadianStudies. The Department would like to make one of these three appointments in language and invites applications in particular from suitably qualified candidates with a background and research interests in applied linguistics or second language learning.
